Frequently Asked Questions
I am not a UTPA student. Can I take the test at UTPA? In general no. The Texas Board of Professional Engineers only allows university sites to give the test to their own students. Exceptions have been made for students of UTB-TSC. People who have already graduated must take the test at one of the sites run directly by the board (Austin, Houston, Dallas, and selected other cities.)
What is the format? 8 hours total: a 4 hour morning session with 120 multiple choice questions and a 4 hour afternoon session with 60 multiple choice questions. A reference handbook is supplied with the test; otherwise, the test is closed book. Copies of the reference book for study purposes are available for download at NCEES, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
What is covered on the test? The complete specification is available at NCEES. The morning session is the same for all examinees and covers basic math, science, ethics, and engineering topics. In the afternoon session, you choose from one of the following exams: General, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical.
How hard is it? The statewide pass rate is available here. It typically is about 65% for all examinees and 75% for engineering seniors. The UTPA pass rate has been about 70%.
